This is a farmhouse peasant sheet, made, unusually, from handspun hemp and cotton. This is unusual because cotton is not a French product, and this cotton must have either come in from France’s then-colonies in West or North Africa, or from the United States. It has been handspun by whomever spun the thread for this sheet, and then woven in with the hemp. The result is a beautifully-textured sheet that is dense and soft and heavy but which still displays the colour and texture which make French antique hemp so beautiful. Like all of these sheets, this one is handstitched from two panels of this handwoven fabric, and then has delicate handrolled hems. There is a small pair of initials EB cross-stitched into one corner. This has been very little-used and is in perfect condition. It measures 192×250cm. These make wonderful sofa throws, or light blankets for summer nights - I tend to pair them with a finer linen sheet underneath - they are light and cool and breathable in the first part of the night but will still stop the chill in the early-morning hours.
