A beautiful handspun and handwoven hemp sheet with large initials SC in one corner. This has been made, like all of these sheets, from two handspun panels the width of a loom, handstitched together to make a larger sheet. It has handstitched hems. This is peasant textile, it would most likely have been made by the same farmhouse that grew the hemp, although the weaving could have been done by seasonal itinerant weavers. This piece has been used and washed and the original oatmeal colour of new hemp has faded to a soft cream, but there is still the nuance of the original colour in the threads. Across the sheet, subtly different weights of handspun thread have been used, giving the impression of textured stripes. The wear has served to soften the textile, making it softer and drapey, although being hemp it still has a lifetime of use left in it. It measures 206×266cm.
These sheets make beautiful throws, or pair them up with a fine linen sheet and use them as a light breathable blanket during the summer months
This sheet is sold on the understanding that it is not cut up or dyed. I sometimes sell used pieces of hemp on my sale instagram account @lagrossetoiledeux - but pieces of this quality deserve to remain intact as a testimony to the huge amount of generational skill and labour that would have gone into making them.
