This came from a small collection of clothing I bought last year, which was clearly from the wardrobe of a well-heeled middle class young woman. Amongst the pieces were several of these skirts, seemingly unused and in perfect condition.
This skirt is made from a very good quality silky cotton damask with a motif of stars running lengthwise between stripes. The motif has been used diagonally at the flounce, to contrast with the body of the skirt. The flounce has also been hand-embroidered in delicate scallops. At the waist, the band is shaped with darts and fastens at the side with two mother-of-pearl buttons which fit into expertly hand-made buttonholes, and at the front side there is a small embroidered initials ‘MB’. But it is at the back that the skirt really displays how beautifully it is made. The back of the skirt is gathered in such a way that it falls in several pleats tucked to the interior of the skirt, and at the back it is slightly longer, creating the fishtail shape that was fashionable at this time.
This is beautifully and sturdily made and has been stored carefully for its entire lifetime. It is entirely wearable and would make a beautiful summer skirt. It is quite a small size, and is fitted at the waist, which measures 35cm lying flat/70cm all around - you need to make sure that you fit comfortably into a waistband of this size as there is no give. It is 80cm long.
