This is an amazing piece of fabric, dating I am guessing from the 1930’s, but could be a little later. It is a silk or rayon satin woven with real silver metal thread to create the contrast design, resulting in a fabric which is both drapey and heavy and has incredible lustre. It changes colour as the light hits it, and the metal thread lends it a beautiful weight. It is very rare to find this fabric in this unused state and good condition. It does have some issues which can be seen in the full-length photo and several of the close-ups. The metal thread itself remains bright throughout but it seems to have tarnished where the fabric was folded and exposed - along the fold lines there is a faint darker line, but namely the section of fabric which was uppermost when the piece was stored - this can be clearly seen in the full-length photo. This section has discoloured - there are some other smaller discolourations but they don’t show up amongst the brightness of the silver thread. The fabric is strong but it was always meant for evening wear. It measures 90×157cm.
