18th century printed cotton panel - toile de Nantes

€105.00

A panel of handwoven cotton, printed in gravure print with scenes from the colonialisation of the Caribbean. These fabrics were produced in quantities from the mid-18th to early 19th centuries by a number of large manufacturers, several of whom were stationed in the port city of Nantes, a city which received many of the goods and people stolen and enslaved by French colonialists. This panel is from a fairly rare toile, there are others that I come across regularly but this piece is the only example I have found of this particular print. It is in good condition. There are some small visible repairs and a little bit of discolouration to the cream background but the red print is very vibrant and has no fading. This would be a perfect piece to frame. It measures 73×77cm.
