I am not sure of the fabric in this very fine, almost transparent handkerchief - is it linen cambric, or is it silk and cotton? There is a faint sheen which suggests the latter. Whichever it is, the fabric is incredible, a match to the amazing extensive and very delicate embroidery which covers all four corners. The foral motifs and infill tell me that this comes from the Touraine region (as does the fact that I found it in the Touraine region :D) and it really is a work of art. The embroidery is raised but has been made with minute precision. The fabric has tiny damages, and there are a number of contemporary repairs, also delicate and almost invisible in some places. A beautiful piece to study or to frame, this would have once belonged to a very wealthy woman - the fabric and the quality of the embroidery speak to this. It measures 45×46cm. It is fringed in delicate machine-woven lace.
