This is a very beautiful tablecloth made from pure, quite heavy, linen, which drapes superbly. I call these farmhouse tablecloths, even though this one is from quite well-off household, because the style, with its raised-weft stripes, is taken from the very rustic peasant tablecloths made in handwoven linen and hemp, which were around in the 19th century and possibly earlier and were often referred to as vineyard or vendange tablecloths. This one is in excellent condition, it does have some very small very pale marks which are storage marks - I have soaked and washed this, they didn’t completely disappear but are so faint as to be unnoticeable. It has handstitched initials BP in one corner. There are two tiny but wonderful visible mends which I have photographed, but overall this is in superb condition and is a beautiful piece of cloth. It measures 175×300cm.
