Early 19th century printed cotton bed pelmet
This piece dates from probably around 1810-20, and would have been part of a cantonnière - the curtains that went around a four-poster bed to keep the cold at bay. This is the head section, and it is beautifully shaped. The cotton printed fabric (I am not sure where this is from, Toile de Nantes, toile de Beautiran - I do not know where it was manufactured and I don’t have enough knowledge of the design) has been backed onto handwoven linen and very fine figured cotton. It seems as though this was partially padded with raw linen fibres, but that might just be the edging. This is in reasonable condition, there are some small damages and the edges are slightly torn in places, but the madder dye is still bright and the piece would look absolutely beautiful hung on a wall (or on a bed-frame) just keep it out of direct sunlight!
It measures 56cm wide at the widest part of the scallops, and is 161cm wide.
