Hand-embroidered onto the finest cotton batiste, this sort of trim was made by piece-workers for sale in the large emporiums and stores such as Le Bon Marché. This is in six pieces - some of it appears to have been used and then very delicately unpicked, other pieces don’t look like they have been used at all. In order to make sure that the warp and weft were running in the right directions, the lengths are made from several strips of cotton batiste joined together. In almost perfect condition - one piece has two small holes in the unembroidered section, otherwise perfect. It is very rare to find such a large amount of the same design - this came from an old haberdashery store. The pieces are all 12cm wide and then 1.95/1.97/3.24/3.8/3.86/5.22 metres long for a total of almost exactly 20 metres. The fabric is very fine and the work is exquisite - the drawn-thread squares may be machine-made but the little roses with their delicate details, and the French knots are all hand-embroidered.
