Large piece of very old linen métis mattress ticking in a strawberry pink
This is a beautiful piece, but very old and used. I’ve stashed it for years because I love it so much but it needs to move on. From the turn of the 20th century or earlier, this is thick linen and cotton damask, with a design of roses in stylized vases, although upside down they look like a modified Eiffel Tower bursting out of flowers. This has been cut from a bed frame, not the actual mattress but the covering for the sprung base, which would have been covered in horsehair and then a rough textile, possibly linen or hessian, and then this. This has damages at the edges where the tacks held it in place, it is missing all four corners where it was cut to be folded over the corner edges of the bed, and it has fade marks along the sides where it was exposed to light. It also has several small areas of faded marks that won’t come out. The camera is not doing a great job at picking them up but they are there. Aside from all its issues, there is still a lot of beautiful fabric of exceptional quality, in this lovely strawberry icecream colour. It measures 168cm wide by 224cm long, and is missing small chunks from all four corners.
