Blue-striped mattress ticking cover from a nunnery (!)
This beautiful complete mattress cover came from a nunnery in the Loire Valley. It probably dates from the 50’s but could be earlier. The fabric is pure cotton but of a superb quality and really lovely weave. It has been carefully made into a box cover - one side is complete, the other has several hemmed vents with ties cut into the fabric, this was to stuff the mattress filler in and tie it closed. Beautifully made, it has been entirely handstitched and around the box sides, odd pieces of similar textile have been carefully fitted together so as not to waste any scraps. There is even a wonderful little patch. This is in very good condition. There is a little wear to the corners, and the sides which have been made from older more worn fabric have some holes - also at some point one of the vents has torn and been repaired. But there is a great deal of beautiful good-quality cotton ticking here for reuse - or you could stuff it and use it for its original purpose. Being nun’s bedding it lacks the usual stains found on old mattress ticking. Let’s leave that there shall we. It measures 121×192cm not taking in the box sides and obviously doubled because it is a complete sack cover.
